Dr Pipe's Biography

The James Bull Lecture 2010: Pathways to Faster MRI
Dr Pipe
James G. Pipe, PhD
Director, Neuroimaging Research
Director, Keller Center for Imaging Innovation

We are delighted to welcome Dr James Pipe to Glasgow as this year's BSNR James Bull Lecturer.

Dr. Pipe received a BSE and an MSEE in electrical engineering, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in bioengineering from the University of Michigan. He also completed a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan. After serving on the faculty of the Department of Radiology at Wayne State University, he joined Barrow Neurological Institute in 1999, where he now serves as the Director of Neuroimaging Research.

He is an adjunct faculty member in the Departments of Bioengineering and Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University. Dr. Pipe serves on the Board of Trustees of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, advisory boards for GE Healthcare and Stanford University’s Radiology Research Center, and the editorial boards of the journals Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Dr. Pipe's research focuses on developing next-generation methods for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that have a significant, positive impact on patient care. He invented the first commercial method for MRI specifically designed to eliminate the blurring of images caused by patients moving during an MRI scan. This method is now sold on almost all commercial scanners. He also works on methods to improve imaging of brain structures, function, and connectivity as well as on methods for measuring blood flow. He continues to help establish the mathematical underpinnings of innovative MRI techniques intended to reduce scan times while increasing the information available to neuroradiologists.

The Presidential Debate:

"This House believes that the future of Neuroradiology is
with the clinical Neurosciences"

Moderator: Dr Robin Sellar, BSNR President

For: Professor John Pickard, Cambridge

Against: Dr John Straiton, Leeds

SOCIAL PROGRAMME

Evening Fri 17th 7 to 9 PM

There will be a drinks reception at the City Chambers where we will be guests of the Lord Provost of Glasgow. He has very kindly invited us to have a brief tour of some of the beautiful rooms in this Victorian Gothic gem.

This will then allow delegates to make their own dining arrangements from the many nearby and excellent restaurants this cosmopolitan city has to offer. In some, prior booking will be required.

Evening Sat 18th. 7.30 for 8.18PM

Carriages 1AM. Dress: Black tie Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery. This will be a drinks reception followed by dinner and a ceilidh.

Here you will be free to explore for yourselves some of the marvels this museum has to offer. Including works of the Italian and Northern Renaissance, French Impressionism, Scottish Colourists and others. As a special treat our very own art historian, Ailsa Bhattacharya, will be on hand to enhance your understanding and appreciation. The formal dinner will be held in the ‘body’ of the museum and this will be followed by traditional Scottish dancing!

This will depend upon exactly how many people express an interest in organised events. We can arrange cultural tours to the Burrell Collection; the Hunterian Museum; The Whistler collection; The Mackintosh House; The Peoples Palace and the like as all are within Glasgow itself. We can offer advice to those who want to do ‘their own thing’…or we can organise shopping trips in the best shopping city outside London! Those interested should note this on the Registration Form.
